Karen’s love of music education began with her first conducting class in college, 40 years ago! Returning home from her first year of college at age 18, Karen applied her fresh knowledge to directing a full stage musical over the summer with youth, adults and a live band. After finishing her BA in Church Music from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Karen was convinced she wanted to conduct youth choirs in Alaska. While she conducted many church choirs for both children and adults in the years to come, her path led elsewhere for many years.
Karen and her husband Marty Lange served as missionaries with Wycliffe Bible Translators for 30+ years, During that time, she continued her love for imparting music, conducting both children and adult choirs in various settings. She also enjoyed the opportunity to teach Middle and High school choirs in an international school in Lima, Peru. More recently, Karen directed music for middle and high school musical theater for 11 years in Central Florida before moving back home to Juneau in 2022.
Karen is the founder and owner of Windsong Musik, an early childhood music and movement studio. She is passionate about music education for children, developing young voices, nurturing through music, and fostering the joy and camaraderie of learning in a rich choral community. She is honored to be the interim director for the Alaska Youth Choir in this season.
